Members of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office were called to investigate a violent crash shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9 in Leonardtown that left one person with incapacitating injuries and a second hospitalized.

Upon arrival near the intersection of Point Lookout Road (Route 5) and Moakley Street on Tuesday morning, officials say that deputies were met by a head-on crash that left one person unresponsive and trapped inside.

The initial investigation determined that a Nissan Altima being driven by New Hampshire resident Wendy Ricardo Laurent, 28, was traveling south near the intersection when she crossed over the center line and struck a Jeep Patriot being driven by Matthew Scott Dement, 48, of Great Mills.

Following the initial collision, both vehicles caromed into the roadway and the Altima was struck by a 2020 Ford F-450 with an attached equipment trailer that was being operated by Lexington Park resident Justin Dominic Morgan, 23.

According to a spokesperson from the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department, crews had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the doors of Dement's vehicle to gain access to him before he was taken to the hospital.

Dement was airlifted to an area hospital for “incapacitating injuries,” Laurent was taken to an area hospital in stable condition, and Morgan refused medical care at the scene of the crash.

Officials noted that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash, which remains under investigations by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Anyone with information about the crash or events that led up to it has been asked to contact Cpl. Brandon Foor at the sheriff’s office by calling (301) 475-4200 ext. 72265 or emailing Brandon.Foor@stmaryscountymd.gov.
